Installing a custom map is one of the best ways to give your Rust server a unique identity and create a fresh experience for your players. Whether you want handcrafted terrain, custom monuments, or a fully modded world, adding a custom map lets you shape the gameplay exactly the way you envision it. This guide walks you through the process step‑by‑step so you can upload, configure, and launch your new map with confidence.
Adding a Custom Map to Your Rust Server
Upload your custom map to Dropbox in your Public folder and create a download link for it.
The URL should look something like this:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/rn8c25v04yqfs7/mapname.map?dl=0
Change the dl=0 to dl=1 at the end of the URL.
1. Go to "Configuration Files."
2. Click "Text-Editor" on the Server Configuration File, server.cfg.
3. Locate the server.url setting. Add your Dropbox custom map download link to this setting.
4. Next, locate the server.level setting. Set this to the server level used when creating your custom map. This can be: Procedural Map, Barren, Hapis, Craggy Island, or Savas Island
5. Locate the server.seed and server.worldsize settings and put a # in front of them.
Save the file in the top-left corner and start your server.
